The Villages Where We Work

Why do villages in Cambodia need a WASH program?Getting-water-right-interim-report.pdf

  • Over 50% of the rural population Cambodia wide does not have access to safe drinking water. In our three target communities, it is 43% in the wet season and 91% in the dry season that do not have safe drinking water
  • 20% of deaths of children under the age of five are due to waterborne disease
  • An estimated 88% of all childhood illness is water related

Village Level Demographics 2018

During our work in the initial three target villages we took time to visit the Village chiefs of next year’s proposed villages. We wanted the Village Chiefs to get to know us and the project details; and to gather demographics to aid us in planning for next year. We visited Leap, Sala and Kouk Phnov Villages. The Commune Chief had given us a local map of the Commune which was amazingly accurate (#1 below) . He also gave us a recent census (#2 below). I have also included the Village Questionnaire (#3 below) which we filled out in great detail with each Chief. By talking to the Commune Chief, Village Chiefs, School Directors and Villagers we were able to gain in depth insights into not only our WASH project challenges but also the politics and economy of our beneficiary villages.

Needs Analysis:  Knowledge, Attitude and Practices Survey (KAP)

Surveyors were brought in to Water for Cambodia and role played the entire survey. They made suggestions for improvements not only at this time but also after the first day of actual surveys.

One major learning from the survey, was when asked about the primary location of defecation, 89% reported going outdoors.  A bad situation in an area that floods and is actually under water twice year.  For the complete survey findings please visit KAP Survey Results.

Proposed Budget from 2014 for work to be completed.  Some of the numbers may change, but the methodology remains valid.
