Below is a picture of Samley, our project manager, conducting a beneficiary interview. He and his assistant, Huch, visited over 200 prospective beneficiaries. They determine the family’s need. It is imperative that each family agrees to maintain the WASH infrastructure and use it responsibly.
Getting Water Right attributes the fact that 90% of our WASH infrastructure is still in use two years after installation to this careful selection process and our continuing education program. According to the UN and Rotary International the norm is 30% to 50% still in use world wide after one year.
Family level screening, community level education, family level instruction, 30 day follow-up and testing; and evaluation after one year are the key elements of a successful WASH program. It is imperative that we build the cost of this education into, for instance, the cost of Bio-Sand filters thus achieving 90% success rather than 50%.
The cost of failure is the health of those we wish to help.
