Home > Cambodia > Hygiene education is key!

The key to a successful Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) program is EDUCATION.

For example, between 2014 and 2015 the rate if diarrhea in Char Village dropped 50% in just one year as a result of one day-long class on hygiene.  Purifying water, hand washing, water storage, open defecation and the spread of waterborne  illnesses were discussed with the village ladies and children.

This past spring and summer the villagers, with Water for Cambodia’s (WFC) guidance, installed 19 dug wells, 100 latrines and 268 Bio-Sand Filters.

What about education?

–Beneficiaries were interviewed individually an educated on the coming improvements, their proper use and maintenance, and health benefits.

–School based hygiene and hand washing program were conducted in all local schools.

–Those receiving Bio-Sand Filters received additional group pre-installation instruction and day of installation individual instruction. Check the Bio Sand Filter photo archive on this website to see the households on the day of installation….really cute pictures of the beginning of a new era in each household.

It has been a couple months since the bulk of the work was completed. However, the education process continues as this photo taken recently in Romeat Village shows.

This exemplifies the difference between our “holistic” philosophy and the  dump and run method.

Please consider our GoFundMe campaign. We need your support to help three more villages in 2019.
